So has anyone ever succeeded in making a sort of generator thing for electric devices at Hogwarts? I keep telling Jack it's impossible, but he's been quite insistent. I've been trying to rig something up for him but I'm useless at this sort of thing, even with all the books about muggle technology I have checked out.
It doesn't need to be anything fancy, as long as it works. I'm currently making a homemade bicycle and I've sent away for some wires and things. It turns out that Jack packed a small television set and game console (at the expense of half his clothing, which explains why he needs his laundry done so often) and they haven't, you know, exploded yet, so I assume it's the electricity itself that causes problems here. But if we use a much simpler system - like with a bicycle and a potato (haven't quite decided how it'll all work yet) - it might work, right? I dunno. It probably won't but I'm having quite a time anyway.
The crux: Does anyone happen to have any small electrical devices I could do a test with? I don't want to move onto the telly and games until I'm sure it'll work (I mean, chances are it'll just do nothing, but I'm worried it might blow up or sprout legs or something). Jack brought along a mobile and charger, but I'd like to try it with a few things. I wonder if the muggle studies professor has a light bulb handy.
Unfortunately, all this means that I've been spending a lot less time keeping up with events in the wizarding world, but every time I open the paper there seems to be more bad news. Interesting about the Valentine's Day vanishing being made into a film, though, isn't it? I have to say I wasn't even aware that you lot had cinema. Does anyone have a favourite wizarding film they'd like to tell me about?

It's funny: growing up in a house where people not only didn't know much about the wizarding world, but didn't want to talk about what they did know, I've never had a sense of how well known Uncle Harry Potter is. Coming to Hogwarts was eye-opening - he pops up in books, lessons, and even in everyday conversation a lot more often than I was expecting - but I never realised how famous he was until I saw him among other witches and wizards. People stop in the hallway just to see him! People ask him for autographs! James told me about that mountain in Mexico with his face carved into it, but I'd assumed he was mistaken when I couldn't find any reference to it in the library books. I certainly believe him now!
Thank you to everyone who's filled out the questionnaires so far. I haven't been able to respond to everyone but do know that your answers have been helpful. Nothing today (I'm sure everyone's tired of answering questions for those inspectors, anyway), but I'll put it out there again that it'd like to speak to anyone who knows a lot about Quidditch. And I may as well reiterate that Jack is still angry about the disappearance and you should all be nice to him!.

I finally got the chance to listen to Ada Crumb's new album, which she was kind enough to send to me. It was Hmm The third track was bearable I was kind of surprised to hear that it's not all that different from muggle music. Is it all like that? I mean, are there any musicians in the wizarding world that just sound nothing like the ones in the muggle world, or is there always this much crossover? Actually, if any other musicians (professional or not) want to send me their album, I'd be interested in giving it a listen. If it's not recorded then you can just sing a song into a Howler (I promise not to open it in the Great Hall). I probably won't be able to pay much for them but I'll at least give you a mention in my journal, if you'd like the publicity.
Now onto the main business:
Given the personal nature of some of the questions here, you may mark your reply as private to me. I assure you that I'm only an impartial researcher.
Please fill out this questionnaire:
1. a) When did you first find out about magic (real magic, that is, not just magicians and stuff like that)? (If you are not a muggle, please skip to #3.) b) What were your first thoughts after discovering it?
2. Prior to the events of Valentine's Day, did you ever feel discriminated against because you couldn't do magic?
3. Do you think that the events of Valentine's Day are part of a neo-purist plot? If not, why do you think they occurred? (I'm not looking for any answers here, I'd just like your opinions.)
That's all for now. Oh, and I would like to get in touch with anyone who really knows their Quidditch. You don't have to be a captain, but it'd be nice if you had some experience playing it.
By the way, my brother Jack has just declared that if he finds out who made us vanish, he's going to give them "a mighty pounding". I should warn you that he has made mistakes in the past so you should probably be on your guard, especially if he already dislikes you. I can't dissuade him.

Hello, Hogwarts! Dear Hogwarts students:
You know, I've always thought of myself as a responsible student, the sort of person who does homework the night it's assigned and hands it in before class the next day, but I've got to admit that this particular assignment has intimidated me somewhat. When I came to Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry, I came with the full intention of learning about the magical world straight from you - that is, you, the students and professors and village inhabitants and what have you. But when I faced the dearth of information that the library offered me, it was hard to even think of pulling myself away from its shelves (do you know how lucky you are? The library at Smeltings - that is, my old school, my other school - could probably fit into yours three times over).
What I'm trying to say, I guess, is that I became lazy. It was easier to read books than to talk to you lot, even when you were sitting at the same table as me. I mean, I guess I was still learning from people, but most of those people are probably dead now. And you guys are living! Living specimens! witnesses to the wonders of everyday magical life!
[All of the above has been scratched out.]
Please fill out this questionnaire (witches and wizards only):
1. a) What is your name? b) Is it a "wizarding name"? c) Are you related to anyone well known in the wizarding world? Please describe their accomplishments.
2. Please describe your favourite spell. What is it called? What does it do?
3. a) If you were raised by "magic folk": Do you remember the first time you met a muggle? What did you think about him or her? Had you heard of muggles beforehand? Did your parents have to have "a talk" with you so that you would understand? b)If you were raised by "muggles": How did you first find out that you were "magical"? My understanding (provided by one of my cousins) is that there is some sort of ritual or quest involving leprechauns. Could you elaborate? (Did it involve following rainbows, or...?)
4. Please describe, in detail, your feelings toward "muggles" (be as honest as possible; I won't take it personally).
Muggles, a separate questionnaire will be prepared for you soon.
